Ollantaytambo is a town in southern Peru. It is approximately 60 km to the
northwest of the city of Cuzco and 50 km from Machu Picchu, situated at an
altitude of 9,160 feet (2792 meters) above sea level.
Ollantaytambo, which means something like "Storehouse of my Lord," is
thought to be the only remaining example of Incan urban planning. The
buildings and courtyards as well as the narrow lanes have their original
form. The straight, narrow streets today form fifteen square blocks, or
canchas, which contain one entrance to a central quadrangle which is
surrounded by houses. The original Inca settlement constituted an
administrative, religious, agricultural and military complex..
The Incas built a notable civilization in western
South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The center of their
empire was in present-day Cuzco, Peru.
Machu Picchu is without doubt the most recognizable symbol of Inca
Civilization. "The Inca Trail", as it is known now, was the Royal Highway that
led pilgrims and officials of the Empire to the Sacred City of the Incas.
